Guildhall Market is the oldest shopping venue in the city and has traded on this site for the last 800 years. Surviving from the 18th century is the  ‘Nail’, a table  on which market transactions took place, hence the saying, ‘pay on the nail’. Today a colourful group of 20 or so stall holders trade from this jewel of Bath. For the houseproud and the hobbyist, haberdashery, hardware, electrical goods, tools, china, teapots, brooms, bins, bags and buckets. For the epicure traditionally packed leaf teas, ground coffees, fine cheeses, locally produced ham and bacon, artisan bread, cakes, vegetables, delicatessen and old fashioned sweets, don’t forget the pet food. For party goers and pranksters fancy dress, jokes, novelties, cards, balloons and flags of all nations. For fashonistas and high fliers, fine jewellery, wraps, pashminas, shirts, bags and  luggage. Those in need of a haircut can purchase a secondhand
paperback and read whilst awaiting their turn. Both shoppers and non-shoppers can try an excellent coffee and a crepe at the retro diner, a full English breakfast, lunch or a wicked bacon sandwich in the cafe.
